Andrea Marshall, LISW

Emai Andrea Marshall

Andrea is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who mainly works with clients on an individual basis and sees both adults and children. She specializes in working with people who have experienced trauma and children who are struggling in school. Alongside her work at FCPC, Andrea also teaches at Walden University, helping create the next generation of social workers.

When working with children, Andrea primarily uses Play Therapy. Together, they do sand tray work, play games, and act out situations the child has been involved in. “I try to teach them through play,” she explains. With adults, her work tends to be based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Psychoanalytic Therapy, which explores how our past experiences affect our actions.

For those new to therapy, Andrea advises to take your time and find the right therapist for you. “The right therapist will make you feel comfortable,” she says, “and there’s nothing wrong with saying ‘this isn’t a fit’ and finding someone who is a fit for you.”

About Andrea

As Andrea grew up in Orion, Illinois, she became inspired by her mom’s passion for teaching but she realized she also enjoyed working with students one-on-one. She then decided social work was the best way to do so and eventually earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Social Work from the Institute for Clinical Social Work in Chicago. Before joining the team at FCPC, Andrea worked at an alternative school and helped students with serious mental health issues with challenges they faced in the classroom.

Fun Fact

If Andrea could travel through time, she would visit Vienna, Austria in the early 1900s to experience the culture and find out where Sigmund Freud, the founder of Psychoanalysis, got his ideas. She would love to be a fly on the wall of his office because the more she reads about him, the more she wants to learn.
